Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of rehabilitation program with combined exercises (aerobic, flexibility and resistance) on pain, balance, strength, anaerobic power and speed in track and field athletes with a history of anterior cruciate ligament surgery six months after surgery.


Method: This semi-experimental study was conducted with a pre-test and post-test design on 30 male track and field athletes (15 in each group). The participants were randomly divided into two groups of combined exercise and control. For eight weeks, three sessions per week, the training group performed a combined program including aerobic, flexibility and resistance exercises in a progressive manner. Variables of pain scale (VAS), balance (star test), strength (one repetition maximum squat), anaerobic power (rest test) and speed (10, 20 and 30 meters) were measured in the pre-test and post-test stages. Data analysis was done using the covariance test at a significance level of 0.05.


Results: The results showed that exercisesThe combination significantly reduced pain (P=0.001), improved balance (P=0.003), increased muscle strength (P=0.000), improved anaerobic power (P=0.000) and decreased the time of 10 meters (P=0.001) and 30 meters (P=0.000). But no significant change was observed in the speed of 20 meters (P=0.899).


Conclusion: An eight-week combined rehabilitation program can effectively improve most performance and pain indices in track and field athletes after anterior cruciate ligament surgery. This comprehensive approach can be used as a practical strategy for a safe return to competitive activities.

Abstract


Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an eight-week combined rehabilitation program (aerobic, flexibility, and resistance training) on ​​pain, balance, strength, anaerobic power, and speed in track and field athletes with a history of anterior cruciate ligament surgery six months' post-operation.


Methods: This quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test design was conducted on 30 male track and field athletes (15 participants in each group). Participants were randomly assigned to combined training and control groups. The training group performed a progressive combined program including aerobic, flexibility, and resistance exercises for eight weeks, three sessions per week. Variables including pain (VAS scale), balance (star excursion test), strength (one-repetition maximum squat), anaerobic power (RAST test), and speed (10, 20, and 30 meters) were measured at pre-test and post-test stages. Data analysis was performed using ANCOVA at a significance level of 0.05.


Results: Results showed that combined training significantly reduced pain (P=0.001), improved balance (P=0.003), increased muscular strength (P=0.000), enhanced anaerobic power (P=0.000), and decreased running time in 10-meter (P=0.002) and 30-meter (P=0.000) sprints. However, no significant change was observed in 20-meter speed (P=0.89).


Conclusion: An eight-week combined rehabilitation program can effectively improve most functional indices and pain in track and field athletes following anterior cruciate ligament surgery. This comprehensive approach can be used as a practical strategy for safe return to competitive activities.
